...The “Breaking Out” exhibit, on display in the Bryan Center last week and now in the Women’s Center, features photographs of Duke students who are victims of sexual batter, holding signs bearing the words of the assaulter or of friends’ responses to the raid. The project, sponsored by Duke’s feminist blog Develle Dish, came as part of a broader sexual charge awareness campaign launched in response to a recent change by the Office of Student Conduct, which reduced the time frame for students to report a sexual battering from two years to one year. Breaking Out director Neha Sharma, a junior, and photographer Kristin Oakley, a senior, recently spoke with The Chronicle’s Julian Spector about their project.
The Chronicle: How did you develop the idea for this project?
Neha Sharma: Over winter burst forth, I discovered Project Unbreakable online, which is artist Grace Brown’s project—she started it in October 2011 and it’s basically the same thing—she photographs survivors of sexual violation holding the words the perpetrator said to them. Develle Dish played around with the idea of bringing something like this to Duke as early as January, but it didn’t really crystallize until we became posted of the new sexual misconduct policy, and we thought it would be even more important to create it to Duke and open up discussion of sexual battery on campus.
