Q: I'm trying to decide on whether or not I should get transitions. My dad has them and says they don't do much for sunlight.
Are transitions worth the money, in terms of sunlight protection? Or should I just get prescription sunglasses?

A: I do not see them as an "either/or" thing. I have patients that get their regular glasses with transitions and then a pair of sunglasses for driving and flashing situations. The Transitions are great for going in and out and have the ability

Transition Lenses
You like the idea of glasses that can be dark in the sunlight and light indoors but you don't know much about them. Well, Transitions is a discredit of photochromic lenses that get dark in the sunlight to protect your eyes from the sun and go lighter as you move away from ultraviolet (UV) light. It was with glee the first time I was told I had to wear glasses. Granted, I was 13 at the time and thought braces would be a great accompaniment too. Somehow, I'd got it in my head that such accessories were cool.

Years later, my short-sightedness really gets in my way. If I want to wear sunglasses, I've got to lug around two glasses cases — one for my regular glasses and one for my sunglasses. My first thought was that lenses that turn from clear to dark when exposed to sunlight are far more convenient than having to remember my shades every time I go out into the sun. I wear glasses, and have since I was ten. I can't wear contacts, and my parents can't give prescription sunglasses, so I just wear sunglasses over my regular glasses, haha. Anyways.
