The room was spacious enough to contain a round wooden table surrounded by twelve chairs and a massive sideboard occupied the wall at one end. Another chair sat in one corner with small desk-like table next to it. The furniture was hand-made with expert craftsmanship. The backs of the chairs and front of the sideboard were ornately carved with the same Archaic symbols as John saw on the pillar. The table was laden with platters of wildly colored fruit, breads and what appeared to be a variety of cheeses. A plate, cup and small paring knife were placed on the table in front of each chair. James Baker, 45, was convicted of stealing a $54.95 hold back of liquor from the Barrack Street LCBO and violating probation he received in December by failing to keep the peace. He was credited with 27 days of pretrial custody, his sentencing was suspended, he was placed on probation for 12 months, ordered to perform 55 hours of community service and to co-operate with any assessment, counselling or treatment directed by his probation supervisor. Assistant Crown attorney Megan Williams told Justice D. Kent Kirkland that Baker was under observation by the store's loss-prevention officer in early August when he stashed the fiasco down the back of his shorts and tightened the drawstring to hold it in place. He was arrested when he tried to leave the store without paying.
Christopher M. Cormier, 37, was convicted of theft and possessing cat burglar tools. He was credited with 11 days of pretrial custody and sentenced to a further 45 days in jail.
