Ray-Ban may have the Wayfarer, Clubmaster, and the Aviator, but there's no sunglass kind that's had more style icons define more shades over the years than Persol. Whether it's the 649's worn by Marcello Mastroeni in Divorce, Italian Style (also favored by Steve McQueen and now JayZ), the 6201's that serve as Will.I.Am's eyeglass frames, or just Jack's beefy tortoiseshells, Persols rarely miss a cane. And now that the same company owns Ray-Ban and Persol, there's a huge amount of nostalgia for the time they were "Made In Italy" by Ratti.
Don't credit us? Just ask the vintage gurus at New York's Silver Lining Opticians, where Kanye West, Jay-Z, Dustin Hoffman, Daniel Day Lewis, and YSL's Stefano Pilati all buy their shades. "The quality and craftmanship remain unmatched by today's factories," says co-owner Jordan Silver. The quality is so good that he and partner Erik Sacher just made one of their biggest buys to date, totaling some fifty pairs of "unused perfect condition pre-Luxottica Persols" from a seller in Italy. "I love this purchase because they came with a posy of original stickers and hangtags in Italian." So do we:
