That same year, Montgomery and his wife, Sherry, purchased a 46-acre woodland tract that contained an old two-room shack on Old Railroad Bed Road off U.S. 129.
They decided to take a chance and cut a five-acre tract off one end of the property and built a 3,500-square-foot residence.
They also cut 11 acres off on the other end, which became Punkin Center Motorcycle Resort.
The couple obtained bank financing for the improvements, which left the remaining acreage free and clear, Jody Montgomery said.
They basically operate under the old-fashioned, pay-as-you-go philosophy, developing and then selling property to finance future developments.
“Hard work through hard times can still pay off, but it requires dedication,” Jody Montgomery said. “We took chances when we elected to touch someone for the money. My bankers supported me, but they thought I was crazy.”
