Jeffrey Yap gives new life to 'The King'

One wouldn’t say that Yap is a dead ringer for the late King of Rock ‘n’ Roll. But one thing’s for sure: the timbre of his voice is as Elvis as it gets. And it was precisely that which bagged him the title of “The King” in an Elvis Presley impersonation radio contest in Sydney, Australia, recently.

Organised by talkback radio station 2GB in collaboration with Sony Australia and Qantas, the contest involved a month-long search for “the voice”. Hundreds of participants called in daily and each had to sing an Elvis tune. The judges then narrowed the list down to one finalist per day, so at the end of the month there were 30 contestants in total.

“I was amongst the 30,” said Malaysian-born Yap, who migrated to Sydney with his family in 1979.

As it turned out, he is indeed a diehard fan of the King.

“I maintain my ‘inner Elvis’ developed at a very early age,” he added. “Two of my uncles were great Elvis fans. They used to play his music incessantly and took me to see all his movies. I grew up listening to them imitating his voice, so it was only natural that I took after them.”
