Sunday night provided perhaps the maximum effort of colorful, old school hip hop, along with one of rap’s brighter new entertainers, both traditionally profane and performing late at the Cactus Courtyard in the Depot Entertainment District.
There was plenty of time to share cries of, “Bow wow wow, yippie yo, yippie yay,” as well as a number of other lyrical phrases that cannot be quoted in this newspaper, when headliner and recording artist Snoop Dogg took the stage at 10:45 p.m. Sunday.
He delivered an entertaining 65-minute concert that remained involving even as it varied in intensity.
Also deserving credit, however, is a 27-year-old Austin rapper going by the name of Phranchyze (pronounced Franchise), real name J.J. Shaw.
He took the outdoor stage at 9:20 p.m. and, with the spotlight operator seemingly on a break, and the audience uncertain what to expect, delivered a wildly entertaining, high-energy, 25-minute set that made listeners want to hear more.
