So it seemed logical any follow-ups should consist of some of our youth of today heading over to rural Ohio to go living without their iPods, piercings, Facebook pages and pamper products.

And, at the start, I have to confess that the outlook didn’t really look too promising, one life-swapper’s suitcase check-list reading: “Hair texturiser, sunglasses, mobile...”

But turns out I was wrong, much to the obvious relief of Amish Jonathan (a dead ringer for the young Rod Hull) and his wife Marietta who’d be playing host to the transatlantic visitors for a week.

Not yet “blessed by God” with a child of their own they’d seen the show’s premise as a way to sate those parental urges, thereby skipping the whole sleepless nights, teething and dirty nappy stage and fast-fowarding straight to the youngster recrimination and unwanted pregnancy phase.

Mercifully though – for them and us – Living With The Amish was blissfully free of the kind of abrasive personality clashes and sulky, sullen strops that usually pad out these “fish out of water” reality shows.
